Workshop 1 – In a Dark Time the Eye Begins to See: Building Trust and Social Communication for Our New Dark Ages

“In a Dark Time the Eye Begins to See”: building trust and social communication for our new dark ages

How do we keep thinking and agency alive in difficult circumstances? Where ‘expertise’ is not guaranteed its own ‘epistemic superhighway’? Where ‘helping systems’ are easily confused with interagency- or integrated practice? Where the natural shifts are towards structural rather than relational solutions?
This will be as much as possible an interactive workshop with an intention to co-create some answers to these and other questions. We will cover five main subject areas with brief presentations, and then exercises to facilitate exploration and opportunities for shared dialogue.
Topics:
● The state of the universe: are we facing a new Dark Ages, an epidemic of epistemic mistrust?
● Trust and Mistrust in helping systems: the rightful place of vigilance, mistrust and credulity
● Forms of Trust, and Social Networks: remembering that epistemic trust is not the only form of trust that we rely on, and learning about the networks across which this trust is shared.
● The problem of Power: how we ignore it at our peril, and how we might understand and work effectively within its complexity
● Communities of Practice: what we got wrong in earlier versions of AMBIT, and the ways ahead to create, hold onto, and share learning.
Dickon Bevington and Peter Fuggle, both known as lively and engaging speakers, cofounded AMBIT (Adaptive Mentalization-based Integrative Treatment) at Anna Freud. AMBIT is a systemic application of mentalization-based theory and practice that is being applied around the world to many working contexts involved with the complex helping systems for clients facing needs that are multiple and intersecting.
