This uncertainty unsettles our internal and relational anchors, weakens intersubjective connections, and places our sense of safety under considerable strain. These pressures bear not only upon individual and collective mental health, but also upon the very fabric of therapeutic work: its perceived value, its effectiveness, and its capacity to generate meaning.
Against this backdrop, the concept of mentalization – the ability to make sense of one’s own and others’ mental states – emerges as more central than ever. It provides both a clinical and humanistic lens through which we may understand regression, disconnection, and rupture, while also illuminating pathways for repair and recovery. Central to this process is the restoration of epistemic trust: the capacity to accept information from others as trustworthy, personally relevant, and meaningful. Without such trust, the therapeutic endeavour falters.

This conference is also, fundamentally, about opportunity – the opportunity to rethink our models, to enrich the therapeutic dialogue, and to craft new strategies of intervention that attempt to address the collective traumas and existential challenges of our time. By bringing together researchers, clinicians, and thinkers from diverse backgrounds, we aim to foster a space where complexity is not an impediment, but a generative force.

We hope that these days of exchange and reflection will nourish your practice, expand your perspectives, and reinforce – despite the turbulence – our shared commitment to a thriving, ethical, and profoundly human clinical approach.

With deep appreciation for your presence and your engagement,

Professor Mario Speranza & Professor Martin Debbané
Chairs of the Scientific Committee
Conference “Turbulence and Mentalizing: Challenges and Opportunities”
